The 2024 Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) round of invitations began last May 21, 2024 and the IRCC sent out 35,700 invitations in the two-week period to approve 20,500 applications for permanent residence.
Applicants will be chosen from the 2020 pool of interested, eligible sponsors, so if you sent your form on that date, double-check your email.
Did you know that in previous years, IRCC allowed people who had lost their confirmation number or no longer had access to the email address provided on their Interest to Sponsor form to retrieve their confirmation numbers or update their contact information?
This process took place after all Invitations to Apply (ITAs) had been sent out, providing an opportunity for affected individuals to correct their details and continue with their sponsorship applications. This policy aimed to ensure that potential sponsors did not miss out on the opportunity to apply due to technical issues or changes in their contact information.
Benefits of PGP
The parents and grandparents of the Canadian Permanent Resident, Citizen, or Registered Indian can enjoy the full benefits of Canadian permanent residence, including being able to work freely wherever in Canada, obtain full health care, get full protection under Canadian law and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and once they meet the criteria, can apply for citizenship, making this a good pathway to permanent residency in Canada.
PGP Sponsors must have met the following criteria to be eligible
Should be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or a registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act.
You have to be 18 years of age or older.
Has to be residing in Canada (potential candidates will be called for to provide proof of status during the Interest to Sponsor phase).
Need to meet or surpass the minimum income requirement for this program (if married or in a common-law relationship, the income of both the sponsor and spouse can be included).
Must present proof of income to IRCC.
Sign an undertaking to offer financial support to the sponsored for 20 years, starting upon their arrival as permanent residents (applicants in Quebec will be required to sign an undertaking for 10 years); and repay any social assistance benefits that have been paid to the sponsored loved ones members (if applicable) for 20 years.
Applicants for the PGP must submit notices of assessment from the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) in support of their application to show that they meet the minimal income requirements.
Temporary resident visa processing time
Adult Canadian residents are required to serve as PGP sponsors. Applicants must cough up $1,050 to sponsor a parent or grandparent under the PGP, and the procedure may take up to 23 months. The individuals that are sponsored are required to provide biometrics after submitting their paperwork. The time required to provide the biometrics is included in the duration of the process.

Who can not sponsor their grandparents or parents?
Sponsoring a parent or grandparent is not permissible for individuals who:
under the age of 18
Won’t be staying in the country, Canada, at the time of the submission of application to sponsor the individuals, as well as when the sponsored parent and/or grandparent become permanent residents in Canada.
The home address of an applicant must be in Canada at the time of submission of the application paper until a decision or result is made on the application to qualify as a potential sponsor.
Are not a registered Indian in Canada, a permanent resident of Canada, or a Canadian citizen;
Is unable to provide proof and papers of income that demonstrate the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI).
