My journey to Canada from Mexico

My journey to Canada from Mexico has been challenging in some ways, it is always hard to leave your country, your family, and part of your life behind to find new opportunities for a better life, but it’s always worth it!

I come from Mexico, I know you’ll probably be thinking about Cancun! But, I am from Northern Mexico as in Sonora, the border with the United States. If you are wondering, why is this relevant? Since we are next to Arizona, most of the schools in my hometown are bilingual. I studied English from Elementary until High School (a crucial thing to do if you’re planning to come to Canada someday) and had the privilege to have my mom as the school English teacher.

It all started when I left my hometown in Mexico at the age of 16 to start my Bachelor’s in Tourism and Business Administration. I have always loved travelling, getting to know other cultures, learning about different people, In short, you can tell I love this career pathway.

During this period in my life, my desire to come to Canada began. I applied through my university for a 1-month program in Vancouver to study English, which I completed successfully. The first time I came to Vancouver I fell in love with the city, with the climate, all the landscaping, nature, basically everything it has to offer, that’s when I realized “I’m definitely coming back when I finish university!”

I took it as a challenge since I don’t come from a wealthy family, in fact, everything relating to finances, I did on my own. As you know, the currencies in most countries are very different. Once I arrived in Canada, my savings were absolutely nothing with the currency exchange.

I graduated from University and in one month I was already working as a junior buyer in a company that makes medical supplies, which was a really nice job. While working there and making my savings I started investigating the process of coming to Canada, which were my options, what I needed, how much, etc.

I talked with several people who knew about this, I read Canada’s official website and were even scammed by an “immigration consultant” who guaranteed an approved permit (this was before I did my research, so do your research before you pay someone! But I just paid $45 CAD bucks).

I started my process in November 2020 and was approved in March 2021, It took some time because we were in the middle of COVID-19 and the offices where I needed to take my biometrics in Mexico were closed, I needed to fly to  Costa Rica and took them there and of course, travelled a little inside that beautiful country! My permit was approved the day after that.

Now I am finally in Vancouver, where I’ve been studying for a Co-op diploma as a Digital Marketing Specialist in Cornerstone International Community College. All while working part-time in a Mexican restaurant, and volunteering with the amazing people at MDS Consulting!

In the beginning, it was hard to find a job, a place to live, and friends. However, in my experience, all the people who helped me at that point were from my own country, which made me feel at home, Mexican people always there to support their people!!

I’ve loved everything in Canada so far, it is a great country, multicultural, and the best place to just feel free and be who you are. Hope to meet you here one day!
