How to apply for a Study Permit?

How to apply for a study permit? Before jumping into it. Let’s start with some basic information. 

What is a study permit? 

It is a document that allows foreign national to study in a Designated Learning Institution (DLIs) in Canada. It is not a visa, this alone won’t let you enter Canadian territory. You need a visitor visa or a (eTA) electronic travel authorization. Therefore,If the study permit is approved, you will be issued one together with the study permit. Here is how to apply for a study permit.

Requirements:

Be fully vaccinated (unless you are under the age of 18)

Be enrolled at university/college/Canadian Education Institution that is part of the designated list of institutions (DLI)

Proof of funds for your tuition fees, living expenses

No Criminal Record (Police certificate might be required)

Good Health and a medical exam might be required

Proof that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires

Documentation

Proof that LOA (Letter of acceptance) original or copy with the study permit application

A valid passport

Two recent passport size photos

Proof of funds: bank statements, letter of support if someone else is paying for you, bank loan, proof of funding inside Canada if you got a full ride scholarship

Letter of explanation which stipulates and narrates your purpose to come and study in Canada. This helps understand the officer the reason you would like to study in Canada.

CAQ (Québec Acceptance Certificate) this is only required if you want to study in Canada for more than six months, your school will provide you with the how-to apply for a CAQ.

Custodian Declaration Letter it only applies for minors, you will need to complete this form Custodianship Declaration form (PDF, 1.02 MB)

Who is a minor in Canada? It all depends on what Province or territory you would like to apply for a study permit. Anyone under the legal age must apply.  Here is the legal age by province and territory.

Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan the legal age is 18 years old. British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Yukon the legal age is 19 years old.

If you are applying from inside or outside Canada, you need to apply online.

After Applying

Biometrics and photos

Process Study Permit , if it is incomplete you might be asked for the missing documents or return the application without it processing it

You might be asked to interview with a Canadian official in your country

Send us more information

You might need to get a police certificate/and or Medical Exam

You can submit missing documents through your account or the web form

Please note your application won’t be processed if it not complete

If there are any changes such as address change, contact info you have to update your application

My study permit was approved where do I get it?

It will be mailed to you or you can get it at the port of entry when you are arrive in Canada

What happens in case of a refusal?

A letter explaining the reason why would be sent to you. You can contact the visa office that issued the refusal letter to ask more questions.
