The spousal sponsorship process involves two stages:

First, the sponsor must submit an application to sponsor their spouse or common-law partner.

Second, the sponsored person must submit an application for permanent residence. How long does it take to sponsor your spouse or partner to Canada?

Applications for sponsorship go through the entire processing cycle in around a year. Normally, they don’t take much longer than a year to process, but it depends on the specifics of your case.

The processing of your application will be delayed and take longer if it is problematic or the visa office needs further evidence of your relationship.

Making sure that your sponsorship application is completed accurately the first time is the best approach to guarantee that it is processed as promptly as possible.

“Sponsor” means: the citizen of Canada or lawful permanent resident who is applying for immigration benefits on behalf of their partner.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), the division of the federal government of Canada that deals with all immigration-related issues, has recently been renamed Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). On this website, “Immigration Canada” might be referred to by either word.
